Laminitis: The puzzle behind the pain with Dr Teresa Hollands

Internationally recognised nutritionist - Dr Teresa Hollands – gave a thought provoking and stimulating lecture to an appreciative audience at Nottingham Trent University’s Brackenhurst campus…and guided us through what causes the painful and debilitating disease that is laminitis.

We saw how has understanding of the causes have been turned on their  head over recent years; yet there are still many unanswered questions.

Teresa led the drive in changing the way we look at laminitis in this country during Laminitis Awareness 2010 and 2011. She is a specialist lecturer at Nottingham Vet School and Senior Nutritionist for Dodson & Horrell (Official suppliers of nutritional advice to the British Equestrian Team).

During the course of the lecture, Teresa looked at laminitis - not just in ponies - but investigated why some of our high level equine athletes can be affected too. We discovered more on key issues and unanswered questions…

• Why we’re not fussed about fructans
• The changing the biology of our horses
• Why some high level dressage horses might be at risk of Equine Metabolic Syndrome when they retire
• The similarities between laminitis and the human heart attack
• The latest on nutritional support for Equine Metabolic Syndrome and Cushings and why the support is different
